Accessibility Commitment

Accessibility Commitment

It is the policy of the Gila River Indian Community, and the Gila River Transit program, to abide by all provisions of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990 and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, as amended, including all programs, services, activities, operations and relationships with—and accommodations/modifications of—employees, client-customers, and the general public, including but not limited to those stated below. The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) requires that individuals with disabilities receive the same level of service as non-disabled individuals. Services that are “separate but equal” are not acceptable (i.e. all individuals using wheelchairs on one bus and everyone else on another bus). Section 504 prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability in any program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.

Gila River Transit service is accessible to persons with disabilities. Buses are equipped with lifts and ramps that enable persons in wheelchairs or persons who cannot step onto the bus to ride. Buses have priority seating for persons with disabilities. Buses also lower to help passengers board. Drivers are trained to assist riders in using lifts and ramps. Drivers are trained in securing wheelchairs and providing destination information.

Passengers may travel with a respirator, concentrator and/or portable oxygen. Service animals are welcome. Service animals must be kept under the control of the passenger at all times.

Public information is available in alternative formats upon request.

Passengers may request that the bus leave the route to be picked up or dropped off. Call the Dispatch office at 520-562-6020 for help planning your trip.

Gila River Transit prioritizes equal access, seating and treatment for all passengers. No passenger will be subjected to discrimination under the rules of Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (as amended). If you believe you have been subjected to discrimination as prohibited by Title II, you may file a complaint with Gila River Transit or with the Federal Transit Administration.
